Spain had no trouble with tiny Tahiti in the Group B opener of the 2009 Under 20 World Cup for both teams. Spain has title ambitions while Tahiti is in their first major international tournament in the island's history. The pedigree showed as Spain raced out 8-0 winners on the day.
The result was never in doubt as it was 3-0 to Spain in only 17 minutes. It only got uglier from there as Spain notched four goals on each side of halftime with Aarón Esclápez, Emilio Lopez and Enrique Garcia accounting for two goals each in the match. Things will get tougher for Spain as Venezuela and Nigeria await on the schedule. Tahiti will just try to work for a good showing on their week in Egypt.
The other Group B game showed Venezuela grabbing an important 1-0 win over Nigeria. The goal came from Jonathan Del Valle right on the stroke of halftime. Nigeria had gone down to 10 men just minutes earlier as Haruna was shown straight red. The win for Venezuela will probably be enough to see them through as at least the second place team from Group B and leaves Nigeria needing a result against Spain to have any hope of advancing.
The other Group A match saw Italy and Paraguay battling to a scoreless draw. The result leaves host Egypt top of group after their 4-1 win over Trinidad yesterday.
