Iran are in serious danger of missing out on World Cup 2010 as they could only manage a 1-1 draw in South Korea on Wednesday. Iran had hopes of grabbing an automatic qualifying spot with a win and looked to be on their way as they took the lead in the 51st minute.
A driven cross defelcted off South Korean defender Kim Dong-jin and into his own net for the own goal. The Iran lead would hold until the 80th minute when their hopes were dashed. It was a wonderful tying goal from Park Ji-sung. The Manchester United midfielder took a short pass from Lee Keun-ho, beat a defender and tucked his shot just under the bar in the 81st minute.
South Korea has already secured passage to next year's World Cup tournament. The tie leaves Iran hoping for a playoff spot as the 3rd place team from the group. They currently sit even with Saudia Arabia and North Korea who face off later today. Only a Saudi Arabia loss would see Iran grab a playoff spot. Any other result and Iran will be out.
